Mentor or Volunteer
Judge, coach, or mentor an Army STEM program — a few hours to a full season.
For fellows who apply and are selected for it, the professional development experience extends into a four-week, in-person research placement each June–July at a participating Army Research Center, working directly under the supervision of an Army scientist or engineer mentor.
The additional Level 2 application materials — resume, lesson/unit plan, and two letters of recommendation — aren't only used to decide who's accepted. They're also what the program uses to place accepted fellows: each fellow is matched to an Army Research Center and a specific scientist or engineer mentor based on the subject they teach and their own research background and interests, as reflected in that application material.
A biology teacher, for example, is placed with a mentor doing biomedical or life-sciences research rather than materials science or robotics — the goal is a placement that connects directly to what the fellow will bring back to their own classroom.
Level 2 sites change year to year, but several labs host fellows again and again. Most fellows fly to their placement rather than drive, and travel, housing, and per diem are reimbursed. The site list is confirmed each spring. Here are some sites that commonly host fellows:
