Teacher Fellowships

Grades 5-12 Teachers

Teachers are force multipliers. Deepen your own research experience — online for Level 1 and inside an Army laboratory for Level 2 — then bring it back to every student you teach.

Professional development, entirely online

The professional development experience runs January through August and is the foundation every fellow completes. It combines structured online coursework, synchronous meetings with other Army STEM Teacher Fellows, live access to Army scientists and engineers, and the development of a classroom-ready STEM lesson plan grounded in real Army research. No travel required.

January-May: Online Coursework

  • Self-paced, asynchronous coursework through the Army STEM Learning Hub that builds content knowledge in emerging STEM fields: cybersecurity, nanotechnology, robotics, and more!
  • Strategies for translating that content into inquiry-based, hands-on classroom instruction
  • A private discussion area in the Learning Hub for the cohort, so you can ask questions and collaborate

January-May: Scientist & Engineer Chat Sessions

  • Live, hour-long conversations with Army scientists and engineers
  • Held roughly 1–3 times a month — a dozen or more across the cycle
  • A fellow's direct line to current Army research and the people doing it, not recorded lectures

June-August: Lesson Plan Development

  • Working with Level 2 fellows, Level 1 fellows apply what they've learned to build a classroom-ready STEM lesson plan grounded in real Army research.
  • Fellows present their finished lesson plan in early August, the capstone of the professional development experience.
  • Fellows are supported in their curriculum development by professional curriculum practitioners.

Plan for real work

This is not a webinar series you can leave running in another tab. Fellows carry the coursework alongside a full teaching load, and the lesson plan is a deliverable that gets reviewed and published. Teachers who set aside regular time for it finish comfortably; teachers who wait for spring break do not.

Application Questions

  1. Why would you like to be involved in the Army STEM Teaching Fellows program?
  2. How do you currently involve your students in research?
  3. How do you use student data and learning outcomes to design and modify an instructional plan?
  4. What are your strengths as an instructor, and how does this benefit your students?
  5. What challenges do you face helping students master STEM content and sustain their interest in STEM careers?

Fellowship cohorts are built by word of mouth. Share the program with a colleague, or bring it to your district's science coordinator.
