Army and University Labs
Open your lab to tomorrow’s scientists and engineers with Army STEM support.
Army STEM partners with research laboratories across the country to grow the next generation of scientists and engineers. Whether you're part of an Army or Department of War lab or a university research team, there's a way to bring your expertise to students and educators and help build the STEM workforce of tomorrow.
Army Research Labs
Host Interns and Fellows
When you partner with Army STEM to host interns and fellows, we provide centralized support for applications, recruitment, payments, and more, ultimately generating a future workforce pipeline. Your university or college will receive supplementary administrative services at no cost and participants will gain access to your incredible learning resources. Available for all Army-funded labs.
Host Teacher Fellows
The Teacher Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for teachers of grades 5-12 to work alongside Army scientists and engineers as active contributors to authentic, ongoing research projects. Your lab can host one of these teachers for a four-week summer fellowship. During the fellowship, teachers become immersed in your laboratory environment, gaining firsthand experience with current technologies, research methods, and real-world STEM applications.
Volunteer
Lab staff can share their expertise with students and teachers through volunteer roles across Army STEM programs. Serve as an eCYBERMISSION Virtual Judge or Mission Mentor, answer student research questions as a JSHS Virtual Mentor, share your STEM journey as a GEMS Virtual Speaker, or lead virtual chat sessions with Teacher Fellows on your research area. Most roles are virtual, and commitments range from a one-hour talk to a season-long mentorship. Explore all roles and how to apply on our Mentor and Volunteer page.
Universities & Community Colleges
Apply for SOI Funding
Strategic Outreach Initiatives (SOI) fund organizations that connect students and teachers with STEM fields relevant to the Army. Universities and community colleges may be a strong fit for Emerging STEM Workforce Funding, which support research and technical experiences for high school students and recent graduates; STEM Workforce Ready Funding, which support technical skills training for emerging STEM professionals; and Force Multipliers Funding, which support professional development for K–12 teachers. Visit the SOI page for all 2027 funding categories and submit an interest form.
Host JSHS
The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) competition challenges high school students around the U.S. to complete their own research. Regional competitions frequently host their symposia at local universities. Reach out to JSHS for more information.
Volunteer
Faculty, researchers, and students can share their expertise through volunteer roles across Army STEM programs. Serve as an eCYBERMISSION Virtual Judge or Mission Mentor, answer student research questions as a JSHS Virtual Mentor, or share your STEM journey as a GEMS Virtual Speaker. Undergraduate and graduate students can also apply for stipend roles, such as Near-Peer Mentor, at GEMS summer sites. Explore all roles and how to apply on our Mentor and Volunteer page.
