Mentor, Volunteer, and Paid Opportunities
eCYBERMISSION, JSHS, GEMS, and Teacher Fellowships all run on volunteers, mentors, and part-time staff. See how you can get involved.
Find a role that fits your schedule and background: from judging a single project online to teaching a summer course in person. Browse roles by program or use the filter below to narrow by time commitment, season, volunteer versus paid, and location.
eCYBERMISSION
A free, virtual STEM competition for grades 6–9. If you are a STEM expert, an educator, a STEM supporter, a community leader or just interested in giving back to the community, join eCYBERMISSION as a volunteer! All eCYBERMISSION roles are flexible and mostly virtual.
GEMS
Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) is a summer STEM camp for rising 5th to 12th grade students, held at Army research laboratories across the country and virtually. GEMS relies on teachers, Near-Peer Mentors, and other volunteers at every one of its in-person summer sites, plus a growing set of virtual roles supporting its at-home virtual summer camp.
Virtual Roles
Centrally coordinated rather than tied to a specific lab — these support the GEMS Virtual Summer Camp ("STEM Force Discovery Lab"). Applications for each role will open early 2027. Check back then for details.
In Person Roles
Based at a specific GEMS site and tied to that site's schedule and requirements. All roles receive a stipend based on experience and educational level. Because each in-person site sets its own dates, application process, and specific requirements, this page introduces what each role does — full details and applications are on each site's own page.
GEMS Roles by Site

JSHS
The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) is a research competition for students in grades 9–12, who present original STEM research at a regional symposium and compete for scholarships and a place at the national event. Volunteer support is essential to the success of JSHS and allows you to inspire talented high school students who are the future of STEM research.
Teacher Fellowships
Teacher Fellowships is a professional development program for grades 5–12 STEM teachers: online coursework and chat sessions with Army scientists, a classroom lesson plan, and, at Level 2, four weeks of summer research inside an Army laboratory. The program relies on coaches and volunteer mentors to help run the professional development sessions and guide fellows through their research and lesson plan work.
