Lela Lesniak at the Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence Conference with her research on plasma membrane glycoproteins in bovine epididymal spermatozoa.
If you’ve had a paper, poster, or other STEM research accepted for presentation at a national professional conference, Army STEM can help cover the cost of getting you there.
The Army STEM Travel Award exists for a specific reason: research that never gets presented doesn’t do the work research is supposed to do. This award removes the cost barrier between finishing the research and telling people about it.
Eligibility
Open to current Army STEM participants and alumni across every program. You don’t need current research to qualify. Awards are available for any research you’re presenting whether you completed it recently or a few years ago.
Keep in mind that international travel is generally not covered, with the following exceptions:
- Travel to conferences in Canada may be funded on a case-by-case basis.
- DoWEA students residing overseas may be eligible for travel award funding to support travel expenses associated with presenting their research at conferences in the United States.
What it covers
- Conference or exhibition registration fees
- Travel: airfare, rail, car rental, ground transportation
- Reasonable lodging (federal per diem used as benchmark)
- Food, up to the federal per diem rate
- If you’re under 18: travel, lodging, and food for one parent or legal guardian
What it doesn’t
- Membership dues for professional organizations or societies
- Expenses not documented in your submitted expense summary
- Guest or companion travel for anyone over the age of 18

There’s no season and no single deadline, but your application must reach us at least six weeks before you travel. Award amounts aren’t fixed. Each one is set from the expense summary you submit, and funds are disbursed before you travel — you shouldn’t have to front the cost and wait.
