Water Conservation

Students experiment with filtering various substances from water by making their own simple water filters to understand the importance of access o clean water.

Overview

Students examine how personal water use affects a community and how limited water can be conserved. They brush their teeth with the water on and off and measure the amount saved. Using Household Water Use Cards for activities such as washing hands, showering, and washing clothes, they calculate gallons used and compare their own use with the U.S. average. A demonstration with one liter of water shows how little of Earth's water is clean freshwater. Students then design and build a water filtration device from commonly available materials and complete a water filter lab worksheet.

Lesson Objectives

  • Use a conservation plan to utilize a combination of strategies to conserve and control surface and ground water resources. Understand the issues of water pollution and the importance of access to clean water. Experiment with filtering various substances from water by making their own simple water filters. Observe and draw conclusions based on their experiment.

  • MS-LS2-4Construct an oral and written argument supported by empirical evidence and scientific reasoning to support or refute an explanation or a model for a phenomenon or a solution to a problem.
  • MS-LS2-5Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Solutions Evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services. (Stability and Change) Clarification Statement: Examples of ecosystem services could include water purification, nutrient recycling, and prevention of soil erosion.
  • MS-ESS3-1Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants and animals (including humans) and the places they live. [Clarification Statement: Examples of relationships could include that deer eat buds and leaves, therefore, they usually live in forested areas; and, grasses need sunlight so they often grow in meadows. Plants, animals, and their surroundings make up a system.] MS-LS2-5. Evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services.
  • MS-ESS2-4Develop a model to describe the cycling of water through Earth’s systems driven by energy from the sun and the force of gravity.
