Lesson plan

Robotics

Students will research robotics and use a variety of tools (infographics, EdPuzzle, Gimkit, sketchnotes) to present their findings.

Grades 6–8Engineering

Overview

Students research robotics and share what they learn through an infographic. They begin with a Boston Dynamics dancing-robot video, post what they notice and wonder on a Padlet, and add images of robot examples. Over the following days they watch selected robotics videos and read articles, creating sketchnotes or EdPuzzles to show their understanding, then check concepts with Gimkit. Each student or pair chooses a robot, investigates its impact on the world and its future, collects information in a Google Sheet, and builds an infographic that is presented and published. Extension activities include a Flipgrid discussion with peer comments. The plan spans twelve days of instruction.

Lesson Objectives

  • Research robotics and use a variety of tools (infographics, EdPuzzle, Gimkit, sketchnotes) to present their findings.

Standards

NGSS · 1

  • MS-ETS1-1Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.

CCSS Math · 2

  • 7.G.A.1Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
  • HSG-MG.A.2Apply geometric methods to solve real world problems.

CCSS ELA · 2

  • RST.6-8.7Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table).
  • RST.6-8.8Distinguish among facts, reasoned judgment based on research findings, and speculation in a text.
