Numbers in Science
Students will use argumentative-driven inquiry (ADI) to create a poster presentation on scientific notation, accurately report data using correct significant figures, and accurately select and/or use the correct lab equipment (related to measurement) required during an experiment.
Overview
Students begin by betting their grade on whether they can fill a 10 mL graduated cylinder to 10 mL in one try, then discuss how scientists ensure accurate measurements and report data. They build a foldable on accuracy and precision, scientific notation, and significant figures, and practice with task cards by rotating among problems and checking each other's work. Using Argument Driven Inquiry, student teams complete a lab on best practices for lab equipment and prepare a poster of their results. The lesson ends with poster sessions, peer review, and a quiz.
Lesson Objectives
- Use argumentative driven inquiry (ADI) to create a poster presentation on scientific notation, accurately report data using correct significant figures, accurately select and/or use the correct lab equipment (related to measurement) required during an experiment.
