Lesson plan

Nature Based Solutions

Students develop a nature-based solution to help restore mangroves, coral reefs, and coastal dunes ecosystems.

Overview

Students examine photo series of coral reefs, mangroves, and coastal dunes, recording features, species, and environmental problems on a graphic organizer or Venn diagram and writing a paragraph. Groups then research one ecosystem and present slides on its location, biodiversity, importance, threats, and protection. In a station lab, students watch videos, read an article on Caribbean mangroves sheltering coral, compare reefs and mangroves in a Venn diagram, and research nature-based solutions. Games, jamboards, and Google Earth extend the investigation. Students conclude by choosing a nature-based solution and presenting it through Canvas, a trifold, or a 3D model. The plan times four phases: engagement 45-75 minutes, exploration 90-120, explanation 180-225, and elaboration 180-220 minutes.

Lesson Objectives

  • Identify essential types of ecosystems.
  • Explain the fundamental structure and function of an ecosystem.
  • Describe how the interactions among organisms within an ecosystem affect the stability of the ecosystem.
  • Identify environmental problems affecting ecosystems such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
