Lesson plan

Meet the Microchip

Students will be able to explain microchip technology and use via real world engineering and design.

Overview

Students watch a clip about a prosthetic leg with a microchip, then brainstorm and diagram how it works. They examine everyday items such as calculators, phones, and watches, learn vocabulary including transistor, resistor, capacitor, and integrated circuit, and read an article on microchip basics. The teacher connects microchips to medical devices such as the cochlear implant and pacemaker defibrillator, including military needs. Students interpret a graph from a research article on microchips in medicine, argue from evidence, and identify a device used by US soldiers with three reasons it needs improvement. Teams design an improved device, complete a lab report, and present it.
