Lesson plan

French Filter Connection

The purpose of this unit plan is to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills related to water management problems in their local community. Students will predict the behavior of water in different conditions to design and construct a functional French drain model and, using data collected through observations and measurements, students will evaluate the effectiveness of their engineered design solution

Grades 9–12Engineering

Overview

Students address local water management problems by building a model French drain in a fish tank. After flooding videos and a group brainstorm, they pour measured water onto a soil-topped tank, then sketch, label, and build a drain from gravel, sand, a perforated pipe, and landscape fabric and repeat the test. Notebook questions have them explain what each material does. In the elaboration they modify and retest the drain, see what happens when soil mixes with gravel without fabric, discuss real-world limits, and test an alternative absorption material. They finish with a lab report with a labeled diagram and test-trial graphs.

Lesson Objectives

  • - Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills related to water management problems in their local community. - Students will predict the behavior of water in different conditions (e.g., saturated soil vs. a well-drained system) based on scientific understanding. - Students will design and construct a functional French drain model within given constraints (fish tank size, available materials). - Students will evaluate the effectiveness of their engineered solution based on observed water flow and drainage time. - Students will calculate and compare drainage rates (e.g., volume/time) to assess the efficiency of their designs before and after modifications. - Students will interpret and represent data collected through observations and measurements to support conclusions about their design's effectiveness.
